Steel prioritizes load capacity and long-term wheel life. Nylon prioritizes quiet travel and less wear on the track. Start with the original wheel material. Door weight, track condition, moisture, and exact roller geometry can justify a change.
Nylon wheels failed early, or have flat spots or cracks
Steel, or a higher-capacity match
The panel load may exceed what nylon can carry.
Steel wheels grooved or chewed the track
Do not just install new steel
Inspect or repair the track first. Nylon only helps if it also matches size and load.
Damp, coastal, or corrosive setting

Corrosion resistance matters. Fit and track compatibility still decide it.
Quiet operation is the main complaint
Nylon
It reduces rolling noise and vibration.
Match the whole system
Wheel material is only one fitment variable. A replacement also has to match wheel diameter, width, edge profile (flat, concave, or rounded), single versus tandem, housing size, mounting tabs, screw locations, adjustment range, axle, and bearing design. A “better” material in the wrong size can bind, misalign the lock, damage the track, or sit the panel wrong.
Steel wheels: Best for heavier doors and maximum wheel durability. May be harder on softer or worn tracks.
Nylon wheels: Best for quiet, smooth operation and gentler track contact. May wear sooner on very heavy doors or dirty tracks.
Check the door before you replace
A dragging door does not automatically mean the wheel material is wrong. Vacuum grit and wipe the rail dry first. Look for dents, grooves, flattened rails, or metal shavings. Do not use WD-40, grease, or household oil. They attract dirt and can ruin a new wheel. If you lubricate, use a dry silicone spray on a clean track. Confirm the rollers are adjusted evenly. Grit wears either material, and a damaged rail can destroy new rollers quickly.
Replace both bottom roller assemblies together when you can, so the panel is supported evenly. Then adjust panel height and confirm the latch lines up.
